1. Start with the application
Begin with what the facility needs to achieve. Define the process, operating environment, users, working hours, site constraints and the outcome expected from the system or equipment. A clear application description usually produces a more useful technical discussion than starting with a product name alone.
2. Define the project scope
Separate the requirement into supply, installation, integration, commissioning, service and any existing-system interfaces that may apply. This makes it easier to compare proposals on a like-for-like basis.
3. Consider interfaces and utilities
Many engineering systems depend on electrical power, water, drainage, compressed air, network connectivity, structural provisions, access, ventilation or other site interfaces. Identifying these early can reduce changes later.
4. Think about lifecycle requirements
Selection should consider operation, inspection, maintenance, consumables, replacement parts, training and service access—not only initial procurement.

- What is the application and location?
- What quantity, capacity, coverage or process duty is required?
- What existing systems must the new solution connect with?
- What utilities and installation conditions are available?
- What delivery, service and maintenance expectations matter?
